Negri declares holiday on Oct 26 for new Ruler’s ascension

By SARBAN SINGH

SEREMBAN: Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir will be installed as the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan on Oct 26.

The 60-year-old Ruler had been proclaimed the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar on Dec 29 following the death of his uncle Tuanku Ja’afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the state government had declared Oct 26 a state holiday.

“From next year, Jan 14 will also be gazetted as a state holiday to celebrate the birthday of Tuanku Muhriz,” he told reporters after chairing the state exco meeting yesterday.

Born on Jan 14, 1948, Tuanku Muhriz received his early education at Sek Tuanku Muhammad in Kuala Pilah, before moving to SM Tunku Besar Tampin in Tampin and Sek King George V in Seremban.

He pursued his tertiary education at Aldenham School, Elstree, in England, and read law at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth.

Mohamad said the state government had also approved appointment of all 537 Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK).

He said the appointments were delayed by several months as the state needed to screen the appointees with the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and Insolvency Department.

“It was good that we did that as several candidates failed the screening. We did not wish to appoint anyone unfit to be in the JKKKs,’’ he said, adding that each committee had 15 members.

He said the appointment of the new JKKKs also took time as some recommendations did not reflect the racial composition in the villages.

“In some committees, there were no representation from the non-Malay communities although there were non-Malay families there.

“Also, we wanted to make sure that the youth and women were also represented,” he said.
