Sabah wants full report on flag-burning incident

By MUGUNTAN VANAR

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah wants a comprehensive report on the incident in Lahad Datu in which the state flag was burned by alleged descendants of the Sulu sultanate making claims on the state.

Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman, who is state security council chairman, said he has asked for a report from the police over the incident on Saturday, condemning the group for trying to create chaos.

“It is not our in our culture to do such things; we want to know who is behind it,” Musa told reporters after opening a bank here Monday.

In the incident, 12 people carrying a yellow flag bearing the insignia of a red lion -- said to be the pre-Independence flag of the Sabah Governor -- were arrested for allegedly burning six Sabah flags.

The suspects, who have been remanded for seven days, were holders of Malaysian MyKads.

Musa said that claim was a “non-issue as Sabah is an integral part of the Federation of Malaysia.”

“I hope these things don’t happen again and police get to the bottom; it could be (the work) of some splinter group,” he added.

Police said that the alleged leader of the group, aged between 14 and 41, claims to be a descendant of the Sulu Sultan.
