Kota Kinabalu to get more reliable power supply

By RUBEN SARIO.

KOTA KINABALU: Blackouts in the city will be reduced to the minimum once a new power supply transmission system is fully operational by the end of the year.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd managing director Baharin Din said the completion of the Kota Kinabalu Outer Ring System second phase (KKOR2) would result in a more reliable power supply in the state capital.

"With the network in place we can can still supply electricity to a particular location if one link fails," he said here on Monday.

Baharin said this the signing of an agreement for the implementation of the KKOR2 costing some RM149mil between SESB and Konsortium YBS Tenaga - Global Globe Sdn Bhd.

Witnessing the event was state Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai.

Baharin said KKOR2 would seen the power transmission network from Malawa in the northern part of the city to Lok Kawi in the south being boosted from the present 66kV to 132kV.

"This capacity is important because the transmission lines are the backbone of our power supply network," he added.

Baharin said funding for the project was provided by the federal government under the 9th Malaysia plan.

He said SESB was looking at a similar upgrading of transmission lines for the east coast towns of Sandakan and Tawau over the next three years.
