Gunmen in March shooting spree shot dead
By FARIK ZOLKEPLI
JOHOR BARU: Police have shot dead two men believed to have been involved in the shooting spree in Taman Perling here on March 30.
They also managed to round up nine other gang members, including a woman, two hours after the high-noon shootout in Taman Daya here on Friday.
Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said weapons including two pistols and nine parang (machetes), and several packets of drugs were seized from the gang.
Acting on a tip-off, a four-man team stopped a blue Mercedes Benz carrying the two suspects, both in their 20s, in Taman Daya, DCP Mokhtar said.
“When asked to stop, the driver pulled out a Smith and Wesson .32mm revolver, forcing police to fire,” he said.
Both men died on the spot. Police recovered a pistol and two live bullets.
Police then raided an apartment in the same housing estate and arrested six men aged between 18 and 20, recovering the machetes, a laptop computer and a packet of heroin.
He said police also arrested two men and a woman at a house in Taman Ehsan Jaya and seized a Glock pistol and more packets of drugs.
DCP Mohd Mokhtar, who did not want to identify the dead suspects, said that the two had past records for gang robberies, murder and assault.
“We believe all of them were involved in a drug-trafficking syndicate and other serious crimes.
“We are also checking to determine whether the Mercedes Benz was stolen,” he said, adding that the suspects’ bodies had been sent to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for post-mortem.
On March 30, gang members on a shooting spree killed P. Vikneswaran, 23, near a bank and injured a 19-year-old youth at a petrol station in the housing estate in Taman Perling.
