‘Rambo’ robber shot dead after hostage drama

By MARTIN CARVALHO

JASIN: A Rambo-style robber armed with a shotgun, an ammunition belt and parang held a family of five hostage for more than 13 hours but was gunned down by police while he was trying to escape.

The family’s ordeal started at 1am yesterday when the 27-year-old robber, armed with weapons stolen from a Rela unit, broke into their home in a palm oil plantation at Kampung Air Melantai, Bemban, here.

Finding little cash and valuables, he demanded RM3,000 and threatened to kill the couple and their three children if he did not get the money by morning.

The husband made frantic calls to friends to raise the money, and one of them showed up near the house about 8am with RM500 in cash.

The husband took the opportunity to ask his friend to alert the police before returning home to negotiate with the robber for more time.

Seized arms: ACP Salehhudin holding the shotgun and showing the ammunition belt and parang recovered from the robber Saturday.

Police, meanwhile, swung into action and dispatched a 20-man team at 8.30am.

Fearing for the safety of the hostages, the police team did not move in immediately but waited in the bushes nearby.

A few hours later, realising that he was surrounded, the robber emerged from the house and shot at the police while he tried to escape using the husband as his shield.

The drama ended around 2.15pm when the hostage stumbled and fell, giving the police a clean shot at the robber, killing him.

State CID chief ACP Salehhudin Abd Rahman said police recovered a shotgun, an ammunition belt with 15 rounds, a parang and RM3,200 in cash from the robber.

Based on initial investigations, the shotgun and ammunition were reported stolen last week by a Rela member from nearby Ladang Air Merbau.

He said police were investigating to determine if the robber, an Indonesian national, was responsible for several violent crimes in Jasin recently.

ACP Salehhudin added that the hostages were all unharmed, with only the husband suffering a slight parang wound on his right shoulder.
