Grandpa, 34, charged
KOTA BARU: A man has been charged in the Sessions Court with raping his three-year-old step granddaughter last month.
The 34-year-old, from Kampung Sungai Hala, Machang, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Judge Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh, however, denied bail to the man and fixed June 24 for the hearing.
According to the charge, the man is alleged to have raped the girl at a house in Taman Desa Arif, Machang, at about 9am.
The labourer, who was not represented, is said to have committed the act in a room.
He was charged under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between eight and 30 years and 10 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Hamizah Ghazali had appealed to the court not to allow bail because of the severity of the offence.
According to Hamizah, the girl is believed to be living with the accused and his wife, in her 40s, after the child’s parents died in a road accident in 2006.
“If the accused is allowed bail, we fear he would do something to the girl who is now under the care of her grandmother, the accused’s wife,” he said. — Bernama
