Sultan Sharafuddin stable after heart op

PALO ALTO (California): The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Shara-fuddin Idris Shah is in stable condition after a 10-hour open heart surgery at the Stanford University Medical Centre here.

The surgery involved the repair of a leaking valve for “mitral regurgitation,” which was decided by the surgery team during the procedure, Kelvin Ong, who is a private aide to the Sultan, said in a statement yesterday.

The team was led by Stanford University Medical Centre’s Professors Dr Craig Miller and Dr Alan Yeung.

Ong said the 63-year-old royal was recovering in the Intensive Care Unit of the medical centre and that the doctors had advised a strict “no-visitors” policy.

Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya specialist doctor and personal physician to the Sultan, Datuk Dr Anuar Masduki, was given special permission to be in the operating theatre during the surgery, Ong said.

“Before the operation Tuanku asked to thank all Malaysians especially Selangorians for their kind thoughts and prayers,” he said.

Sultan Sharafuddin has been advised to rest and recuperate in hospital for about three weeks.

Last Wednesday, Sultan Sharafuddin left for California from Singapore accompanied by his younger brother Tengku Indera Setia Selangor Tengku Ahmad Shah.

Others who left with them were Datuk Dr Anuar Masduki, Datuk Pengelola Bijaya Diraja Selangor Datuk Zakaria Abd Rahman and Tan Sri Datuk Seri Syed Mohd Yusof Tun Syed Nasir.
