Three more cleared of H1N1

By MAZWIN NIK ANIS

PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry has cleared three people who were sent to isolation wards for observation for possible infection of the influenza A (H1N1) virus on Wednesday.

They were declared free of infection after tests by the Institute of Medical Research (IMR) came out negative, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican.

He said the IMR was still conducting tests on samples taken from a fourth person who was sent to an isolation ward on the same day.

He noted that Malaysia is currently free of the influenza A (H1N1) virus.

As of Wednesday, 43 flights with a total 6,379 passengers had been screened at the KL International Airport, Dr Ismail said.

“Authorities manning land entry points have screened 333 people, while 641 ferry passengers were also subjected to the same procedure,” he said.

Dr Ismail said the Health Ministry had installed four additional thermal scanners, two each in the Penang and Kota Kinabalu international airports, to facilitate and expedite the screening process.

“The National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre has received numerous phonecalls from the public enquiring on matters related to influenza A (H1N1), such as vaccines, treatments and also to ask if it is safe to travel.

“Our advice is to postpone travel plans if possible, especially to affected countries. If travelling abroad is unavoidable, they should take precautionary measures while there,” he said.

Dr Ismail said the Health Ministry and relevant agencies were taking proactive measures in line with World Health Organisation advice and guidelines to protect public health.
