Sabah to phase out use of plastic bags in stages

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will soon phase out the use of plastic bags to promote love for the environment among the public.

However, state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said the effort would be done in stages so that there would not be any negative impact to the economy.

“This is a sensitive subject as it involves a multi-million dollar industry and they employ a lot of people.

“We need to take a holistic look at the whole situation,” he told reporters after launching the ministerial-level World Environment Day at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park near here yesterday.

Masidi said it was important to give plastic manufacturers time to replace their existing machines with those that could produce biodegradable plastic. — Bernama
