Cabbies who get foreigners to drive warned
JOHOR BARU: The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) will terminate the permits of taxi operators who hire foreigners to drive their taxis.
The board’s newly-appointed chairman Datuk Halimah Sadique said: “Passenger safety is our priority.
“Those guilty of such an offence can be fined up to RM300 but if the situation persists, we will terminate their permits.”
Speaking after launching the Johor Baru Taxi Drivers Cooperative annual general meeting here Sunday, she reminded taxi operators not to take their permits for granted.
“They must carry out their duties responsibly as people’s lives are at stake,” she said.
On another issue, Halimah said the Government was expected to announce the increase in taxi fares soon, after conducting a thorough study.
When asked about the issue of kereta sapu (unlicensed taxis) at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex here, Halimah hoped that the Road Transport Department would work closely with the CVLB to tackle the issue as soon as possible.
“This problem affects the income of the taxi drivers that ply at the entry point to Malaysia.
“I am confident that it will be solved soon,” she said.
