30km-long electric fence to keep elephants at bay in Hulu Perak
LENGGONG: The Perak government is to build an electric fence along a 30km stretch between Lenggong and Gerik to keep wild elephants away from newly cultivated areas as well as villages in Hulu Perak.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the state government had received an allocation of RM2.17mil to put up the fence.
Besides trampling upon the crops of the villagers, the elephants also destroyed the oil palms of several Felda and Felcra plantations, he told reporters after a meet-the-people session at the Dewan Merdeka, here Tuesday.
It is believed that Hulu Perak has about 300 wild elephants.
Zambry also said that the state government would also find the best solution to the problem of wild monkeys breeding rapidly in Hulu Perak.
The monkey population in Hulu Perak started to grow after people started relocating the animals from elsewhere, he said.
"We are not solving the problem by doing this. I have discussed ways we can approach this problem together with the other district councils," he said. - Bernama
