A(H1N1): All public places must be clean (Update)
KUALA LUMPUR: Highest level of cleanliness will be maintained at all public areas and amenities to prevent the Influenza A(H1N1) virus from spreading.
Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin said the local councils have been instructed to step up cleanlines at public areas especially toilets, tourists spots and hawker centres.
“We want all these places to be clean,’’ he said after inspecting two public toilets and a hawker centre in Pantai here Wednesday morning.
He was dissatisfied with the condition of the two public toilets.
“There are tissues and cigarette butts in the basins, the floor is dirty, the mirror broken and the doors are not in good condition.
“The local councils must make sure that all public places are clean and the necessary facilities are in place,’’ he said.
He said stricter laws would be enforced, if needed, adding that the move is part of the 10 steps outlined to combat the pandemic.
Lajim said the ministry would apply for allocations to help local councils repair or upgrade the public amenities, adding the amount has yet to be decided.
He also urged the people to be more considerate and civic-minded while using the public facilities such as not stepping on the toilet bowls and littering.
He said a cleanliness campaign would be launched to raise awareness among the people in three weeks.
