Volunteer who helped contain fire collapses and dies
KUCHING: A middle-aged couple were killed in a fire while the volunteer who fought the blaze died shortly after suffering chest pains.
Liew Kaet Lim, 50, was killed as he attempted to save his wife, Liew Chun Lain, who was trapped in their single-storey house in Taman Desa Wira, here.
Too much to bear: Two of the couple’s children breaking down after seeing their parents’ remains at the scene of the fire in Kuching yesterday. Chun Lain, also 50, was burnt to death in the fire, which broke out late Monday afternoon.
An eyewitness said Kaet Lim, who had earlier escaped from the fire with his eight-year-old grandson, dashed back into the house after realising that his wife was still inside.
Firemen later recovered the remains of the couple.
The couple’s three children were not at home when the tragedy struck.
A neighbour said the fire spread quickly and that a large quantity of recyclables like old newspapers, used plastic products and cardboard boxes stored around the house were also destroyed.
Volunteer Jawa Sikau, 32, who helped to fight the fire, died shortly after returning home.
A family member said Jawa complained of chest pains and breathing difficulties before he collapsed and died.
His body was sent to the hospital for a post-mortem.
