Iranian’s attempt to smuggle in RM5.75mil of syabu foiled

By SARBAN SINGH

SEREMBAN: Customs foiled an attempt by an Iranian to smuggle in 20kg of syabu in its liquid form worth some RM5.75mil at the KL International Airport on Thursday evening.

The 26-year-old man who had visited Malaysia three times previously, was carrying the drug in five sealed tins and its contents were labelled as cucumber pickles.

This was the single biggest syabu seizure at the KLIA so far this year.

Customs deputy director general (enforcement) Datuk Md Hassim Pardi said the man, who arrived from Dubai at around 3.40pm, was walking through the “green lane” when he was stopped by a Customs officer.

“The officer asked him what he was carrying and then told him to have his luggage scanned. We found the syabu in its liquid form after opening one of the tins,” he told reporters at the Customs Narcotics headquarters at Kg Jijan near here.

This was also the first time syabu was brought into the country in liquid form that turns into crystal form when exposed.

Md Hassim said Customs officers also foiled an attempt by an Indian national to smuggle in 4kg ketamine earlier on Thursday.

The 55-year-old man had boarded a flight from Colombo and arrived here at 1.50pm.

“We also sent his luggage through the scanner and found some suspicious looking stuff in it. When we opened it, we found ketamine powder wrapped in packages and hidden between sarees,” he said adding that the drug had a street value of RM72,000.

Md Hassim said the suspect had wrapped carbon paper around the ketamine so that the scanner would not be able to detect it.

“But the carbon was of inferior quality and we managed to detect the drug,” he said adding that the suspect had also entered the country on three occasions previously.

Md Hassim said both men had been remanded for seven days and both cases were being investigated under section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

He said Customs had in the first six months of this year detected 40 drug related cases and seized drugs worth some RM31.2 mil at the KLIA alone.

“The seizures include 46kg of syabu worth some RM11.5mil,” he said.

He also appealed to members of the public to contact Customs at 1-800-88-8855 or 06-791 7792/7587 if they had information on drug smuggling related activites.

“Financial rewards will be given if their information is accurate,” he added.
