MCA Youth: Don’t use hudud laws against snatch thieves
By BEH YUEN HUI
KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA Youth is opposed to the suggestion of using hudud laws against snatch thieves, including chopping off their hands. Instead, it proposed stiffer punishment for such a crime than now.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Mej-Jen (R) Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom had at Thursday’s Parliament sitting suggested the use of Syariah law on snatch thieves in tackling the rampant number of cases.
MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said imposing stricter laws was a better way to combat crime.
“Islamic laws cannot be implemented in Malaysia according to the Federal Constitution and this, as well as the current legal system, should be maintained,” he said after chairing the wing’s exco meeting at Wisma MCA here yesterday.
He said the wing suggested a mandatory 10-year jail term and 10 strokes of the rotan for convicted snatch thieves.
Dr Wee, also the Deputy Education Minister, said the wing took to task the opposition parties for twisting their words.
He said the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat government had carried out a campaign to re-register the state’s panel of contractors.
He said the forms stated only Pakatan MPs or state assemblymen could act as supporting parties for the applicants.
“Earlier, they accused the Barisan Nasional government of doing so but this was later found to be baseless.
“Now, they are doing it and we have the proof,’’ he said while showing a copy of the registration form, adding that the Selangor MCA Youth would follow up on the matter.
