PAGE concerned over potential policy change

THE Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) was initiated by parents in 2008 to establish a platform voice for the largest stake-holders in the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in English. While views of nationalists and politicians are clearly represented, the non-political voice of parents is lacking.

Since its setting up, PAGE has been the vanguard in championing the continuation of the existing policy and we have been at the forefront at ministerial round-table discussions.

PAGE has worked closely with the Education Ministry (MOE) and provide them with our feedback and justifications to the existng policy.

We are happy that studies and statistical evidence put together by the MOE supported the arguments put forth by PAGE and are pleased that the policy is maintained for 2009.

Recent announcements by the Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that there will be a “final decision” has raised grave concerns amongst parents. As evidenced by the numerous letters from concerned parents, they fear that the Ministry is embarking on a policy change.

In this regard, PAGE has written in to seek an appointment with the DPM to express the views of parents who are genuinely concerned with their children’s future. We all hope that our children will do better in life and good education is the foundation of their success in overcoming the challenges in their time.

PAGE is anxious that the final decision will be politically motivated as the media reported that the DPM had granted audience with opponents of the policy.

Reports also seemed to show the two deputy ministers are not in favour of the existing policy, notwithstanding vast data showing arguments to the contrary.

ROZ MAWAR,
Deputy Chair, PAGE.
