British honeymooners go traditional

GEORGE TOWN: Briton Stephen Paul Mitchell was so enamoured by the beauty of Penang island that he decided to hold a simple Malay traditional wedding on the beach in Tanjung Bunga.

Mitchell, 26, who visited the state two years ago, discussed the idea with his wife Claire Louise Blackwell, 24, who agreed that it would be something extraordinary.

The groom, who was clad in a sky blue baju Melayu complete with a songkok, and the bride in light blue baju kurung looked resplendent as they made their way to the stage and sat on the dais during their wedding ceremony yesterday.

Do what the locals do: Mitchell and Blackwell having their Malay traditional wedding at Tanjung Bunga beach Saturday.

They also enjoyed every bit of the adat berinai (henna staining) ceremony.

Mitchell, a company supervisor from North Hamptonshire, said he fell in love with the island and knew that he just had to come back.

“The wedding is meaningful to me since my mother Dawn Theresa Comley was born in Taiping in 1958,” he said.

“She is not here today as she could not stand the long flight,” he said.

The couple, who were married in Britain on July 4, are also having their honeymoon here.

“Initially, we were just looking for a simple beach wedding but a local friend suggested that since we’re here, it would be better to do it à la local Malay custom,” Mitchell said.
