Family turned down Government’s offer to help, says Raja Nong Chik

KUALA LUMPUR: All but one of the victims of a fire at Bukit Kerinchi here accepted Govern-ment aid, said Federal Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

He denied that the Government had refused to help the victim who was a PKR member.

“We offer help to anyone as long as he or she is a victim and a Malaysian,” he said after some people demanded an explanation why one family was not offered aid.

Raja Nong Chik and Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, visited four families who were victims of the fire at Bukit B in Bukit Kerinchi here yesterday.

The families lost their houses in the fire two days ago.

They received RM2,836 and temporary accommodation at the Sri Cempaka people’s housing scheme yesterday.

The money was donated by the Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti), Federal Territory Foundation and Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

Raja Nong Chik said 196 squatter families from Bukit B had moved to Sri Cempaka and 90% of the remaining 120 families would eventually move there.

Rosmah said she was appalled by the condition at the squatter homes and urged the residents to move to Sri Cempaka as soon as possible.

“It is dangerous and uncomfortable to live here. A fire in one house will quickly spread to other houses,” she said.
