No overseas ban for athletes, says Shabery

SEPANG: The Youth and Sports Ministry has no plans to bar athletes from taking part in overseas competitions due to the influenza A (H1N1) global pandemic until it is advised to do so by the Health Ministry.

Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said his ministry had asked all sports bodies to advise athletes going abroad on the precautions they needed to take to protect themselves against possible infection.

In cases where big contingents are sent, he said that a doctor would accompany the athletes.

Athletes were also checked by doctors prior to their departure while local sports bodies would also check to ensure that the event organisers took adequate steps to ensure the safety of the athletes, he said.

“The Health Ministry has not advised us against sending our athletes to overseas competitions. So, for now, we have no reason to stop taking part in such competitions,” he said after seeing off the Victoria Institution brass band at the KL International Airport here yesterday.

The band, comprising of 90 students from Forms One to Six, will compete against some of the best brass bands in the world at the World Bands Challenge in Modena, Italy, on Sunday.

The band, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, took the first prize in the competition in Shanghai last year and expects to face stiff competition from Thailand and Japan when it defends the title this year.
