JI’s Noordin not in Malaysia, says Hisham
PETALING JAYA: Jemaah Islamiah splinter group leader and master bomb maker Noordin Mat Top is not in Malaysia.
“I don’t know where he is. I can only confirm that he’s not here,” Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein told reporters after the launch of the safe city initiative in the Ara Damansara township here yesterday.
When further asked if he was sure that Noordin, wanted in connection with the twin hotel bombings in Jakarta last week, was not in Malaysia, he replied: “Yes, I’m sure.”
Hishammuddin said Malaysia’s intelligence service was working very closely with its Indonesian counterpart in the hunt for the terrorists involved in the bombing.
Asked to comment on terrorism experts pointing the finger at Noordin as being behind the bombings, Hishammuddin said there was no real indication that he was responsible.
He said it was not a question of one person because terrorism was a global phenomenon which involved a network of people.
He said the authorities were monitoring Noordin’s followers in the country.
Hishammuddin said the recent detention of three men under the Internal Security Act in Johor before the bombing in Jakarta showed that Malaysia’s intelligence service was doing a good job.
Asked if the three were linked to the bombing, he said: “I’m not in a position to tell you that they were related to the bombings, but they are terrorists.”
The three locals, aged between 43 and 53, arrested by Special Branch officers on June 25 following months of investigation, were believed to be attempting to revive the JI network in the country.
