Soh: I will let the past go
KAJANG: Soh Cher Wei said she has made her peace over her fiance Teoh Beng Hock’s death and will now remember their happy times together instead.
She also managed to hold her tears back as she attended the seventh day memorial ceremony for Teoh, whom she regards as her husband.
Rest in peace: Soh saying a prayer at the memorial ceremony for Teoh at the Nirvana Memorial Park Wednesday. “I feel that he is all right now. This is a beautiful resting place. I told myself that I did not need to cry. I will let the past go,” she said when met after the ceremony held at the Nirvana Memorial Park near here yesterday.
Chinese funeral rites state that on the seventh day after death, the soul of a departed family member will return to the home where the family members were expected to remain in their respective rooms to wait for the visit.
Teoh, who was the political secretary to Selangor exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah, died on July 16 after falling from one of the floors of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam.
He died after hours of interviews with the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission which is located on the 14th floor of the building.
Teoh’s mother Teng Shuw Hor pleaded for the soul of her departed son to “come home”.
“Come back tonight son. I will wait for you but please, you must come home,” she said softly in Hokkien in between sobs.
Teoh’s father Leong Hwee, elder brother Beng Kee and other family members had travelled from the family home in Alor Gajah for the ceremony at 11.30am.
They brought his favourite dishes – chicken curry, fish curry, fried noodles, fruit and pork trotter stew.
Keeping to Hokkien customs, Soh planted a yam plant at the base of his grave. Everyone then burnt paper money as an offering.
Soh said she would be returning to Batu Pahat to stay with her own family on Sunday. She insisted that her unborn child would carry Teoh’s surname.
When asked whether she would tell the child the story of Teoh’s passing, she said it was too early to tell.
