Umno willing to lead education awareness movement: DPM
ALOR SETAR: Umno is ready to lead an education awareness movement to raise the level of education in the country and close the gap between urban and rural students, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Friday.
“There should be a large-scale movement to raise education awareness ... . let Umno lead this effort and through this effort, parents will become more aware of the importance of education,” said Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister and Umno deputy president.
The Barisan Nasional was committed to the development of education and had never neglected its duty in this regard , even in states which had different political views from it, he said at the launch of the Kedah Umno Education Excellence Programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Aman, Anak Bukit.
Muhyiddin said the responsibility of raising the level of education rested not only on the shoulders of teachers, the Government and schools but also on parents.
He said effective programmes like the one launched by the Kedah Umno Friday would be beneficial in efforts to raise the performance of poor students.
“Various programmes like free extra clases and motivation camps are held without consideration of political borders and this is evident from the fact that for Kedah alone, the Government has allocated RM1.1bil under the Ninth Malaysia Plan and the two economic stimulus packages,” he said.
This smart programme launched by the Kedah Umno education bureau would be a launching pad to enhance excellence among students in Kedah, which is under PAS rule, he said.
At the launch, the Mara Education Foundation contributed RM50,000 to the programme. -- Bernama
