RM300 fine for using regrooved tyres after Nov 1
SEREMBAN: From Nov 1, motorists who use regrooved tyres would be slapped with a maximum fine of RM300.
Private vehicle owners and taxi drivers who fail to use Malaysian Standard (MS) or “DOT” approved tyres would be liable to a similar fine as the authorities look into ways to reduce road accidents.
“DOT” indicates conformity to international tyre manufacturing regulations and would include information such as the date the tyre was manufactured, load and pressure allowed, tyre construction details and maximum load capacity.
Regrooving is the practice of carving out the rubber from the surface of an already exhausted tyre to create more tread depth.
Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said the Road Transport Department and police would start issuing summonses once the “educational” period was over.
“We are in the midst of amending the Road Transport Act to include a new clause to ban the use of regrooved tyres as well as requiring motorists to use only approved tyres.
“We want motorists to know that it is extremely dangerous to use these tyres,” he said
Suret added that this was part of the “Your Vehicle is Only As Safe As Your Tyres” campaign which the ministry hopes to launch soon.
