Penang CM moves out of official residence

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng moved out of his official residence Seri Teratai on Friday due to termite infestation and to allow treatment and repair works to start.

He and his family moved to a rented house here and appealed to the media not to publish where he is staying to fulfil the house owner’s request for privacy.

He also asked that his family, especially his children, be given some privacy at the new place.

His press secretary Cheong Yin Fan said in a statement that Lim had instructed the State Secretary’s office and the Public Works Department to conduct a study on the treatment and repair works to make Seri Teratai structurally safe.

It was reported that Lim who moved into the residence on June 21 last year had requested for termite inspection a few weeks ago when he discovered signs of termite damage.

A company appointed by Lim found three main termite active spots in the building. Apart from termite infestation, forest fire ants were also found in one section of the house.

“The Chief Minister has no choice but to move out temporarily to ensure the safety of his family and to enable repair works to be carried out,” Cheong said.
