Opposition pact not genuine, say BN leaders
ALOR SETAR: The crisis faced by the PAS-led Kedah government showed that the opposition pact was not genuine, said Barisan Nasional leaders. They also cautioned that the “drama” could be a camouflage for the pact’s failure to look after the interest of the people in the state.
Kedah Umno deputy chairman Datuk Paduka Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said he was not surprised by the state DAP’s move to quit the Pakatan coalition.
“The cooperation between PAS and the DAP is not genuine compared to the ties among Barisan Nasional component parties.”
MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said PAS and DAP’s cooperation in Kedah was merely “shadow play.”
“The two parties have long not been able to work together because their policies are different, so we don’t know why they continued to perform wayang kulit,” Liow, who is also Kedah MCA chief, said.
Their ideologies and style of running the country were different and this showed that there were a lot of weaknesses within the coalition, he added.
Kedah Gerakan, meanwhile, hoped that the state DAP’s decision to pull out of the state Pakatan was not a political show to camouflage its failure to protect the interest of the people.
Its chief Dr Cheah Soon Hai said the state DAP had made a similar threat last year when the PAS-led government did not withdraw the policy requiring a 50% housing quota for bumiputras.
“However, no such move materialised,” he added.
MCA information and communication bureau chairman Lee Wei Kiat said the demolition of Kedah’s only pig abattoir revealed PAS’ true colours.
PAS’ slogan in the last general election, he added, has turned out to be misleading and a ploy to canvass for votes as its extremist actions showed disdain for the feelings of the Chinese community in Kedah.
