Cheers replace tears for SPM top achiever

SEREMBAN: Mo Ye Vonn was devastated when her application for a government scholarship to study medicine was rejected in May.

Ye Vonn (pic), who was one of the top students in the state with 10 1As and a 2A in the SPM examination, even stopped having her meals when her appeal was turned down by the Public Services Department (PSD).

Today, she is all smiles.

Ye Vonn, who recently completed her national service training in Malacca, will be reporting at the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology University on July 15.

Rasah MP Loke Siew Fook had taken her to meet PSD officials in Putrajaya after her appeal was rejected.

They even met with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz who was in Seremban to attend an event.

“I will now be able to pursue my lifelong ambition of becoming a doctor and serving the country,” said Ye Vonn when met at Loke’s service centre here.

Her plight was highlighted in The Star on May 13.

Ye Vonn’s mother, Teo Ai Woo, who was also present, said her daughter became withdrawn after her appeal was rejected.

“But now my husband and I are overwhelmed with happiness. Prior to this, Ye Vonn was crying all the time,” said the housewife.

Ye Vonn had applied for a scholarship as her father’s income as a factory supervisor was not enough to finance her medical course.

Her brother, Ye Vonn’s only sibling, is also a PSD scholar. He is studying for a degree in actuarial science in the United States.
