Sabah power rationing continues
KOTA KINABALU: Power rationing continues to haunt consumers in Sabah as the state’s utility company is still dogged by a drop in electricity generation shortfalls since April.
Having promised that power supply would return to normal by the end of June, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) has announced another round of load shedding, claiming that its generating capacity could not meet power demands following new problems at some of the independent power plants (IPPs).
SESB senior manager (communications) Cendramata Sinteh said that there was a shortfall of about 110MW which forced the company to reintroduce load shedding which was being tailed off since late June.
“Apart from generation drop from our Tenom Panggi and Patau Patau plants, some IPPs are also facing technical problems,” she said, adding that SESB had announced planned load shedding throughout Sabah.
The load shedding would be carried out during peak hours between 9am and 9pm with each area facing a maximum of three hours’ power cut.
This is to enable the utility company to meet peak hour power demands.
Despite the scheduled shutdowns, however, the Duchess of Kent Hospital was caught unaware when power was cut off in Sandakan yesterday.
This prompted the hospital’s board chairman John Khoo to express disappointment over the blackout, which he said should not include the hospital as it was a critical facility.
SESB Sandakan and East Coast Zone manager Chong Poh Ming said the power shutdown was to facilitate work to connect Sandakan’s northern ring road street lights system.
Chong said that SESB was prepared to provide the hospital with a mobile generator as a back-up during scheduled shutdowns in the future.
