Keep database of participants, Penang urges event organisers
GEORGE TOWN: The state government is appealing to all organisers of international events and seminars to keep a detailed database of participants in view of the rising cases of influenza A (H1N1).
State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said it was important that the organisers keep such a database so they would be able to assist the Health Ministry should there be a flu case among the participants.
“We cannot force the organisers to do this but the state is appealing to them to take precautionary measures if they are organising international seminars which involve foreign participants,” he told a press conference at the launch of Percaya – a trilingual digital album by recording artiste Jzelynn here yesterday.
Citing a case where five out of seven Indonesian participants tested positive for the disease after attending an international seminar at Universiti Sains Malaysia last week, Phee said the organiser and state health authorities were having difficulties trying to trace who the victims had had contact with and their flights.
“Until today we’re unable to trace their flights and who they had come into contact with while they were in Penang. This makes it hard for us to contain the spread of H1N1,” he said.
