Nabbed — couple who sold drugs to pay for wedding
By ANDREW SAGAYAM
KUALA LUMPUR: A couple who turned to crime to save up for their wedding have been nabbed.
It is learnt that they had been struggling with the wedding expenses and resorted to selling drugs for cash.
The 28-year-old Internet cafe employee and his 23-year-old girlfriend, a hair salon employee, were caught distributing ketamine in Sentul and other areas in the Klang Valley.
Sentul police chief Asst Comm Zakaria Pagan said the couple had been doing the rounds since January. They were arrested at 10pm last Thursday following a public tip-off.
“Police stopped a Kia Spectra driven by the woman in Desa Setapak. During the ensuing inspection, we found three bundles of ketamine weighing 3kg worth about RM50,000.
“Initial investigations revealed that the couple distributed the drugs to entertainment outlets and housing areas in the city and Selangor,” he said.
ACP Zakaria added that the couple had no previous criminal record but police were investigating whether they were involved in other criminal activities.
This is the second of such case here within a month involving couples who got involved in crime in order to earn enough to get hitched.
A security van driver who fled with RM250,000 on June 8 had planned to marry a woman who worked as a clerk in the same security company before she resigned five months earlier.
The 38-year-old former employee of Safeguards Securicor and his 26-year-old girlfriend were nabbed in an ambush in Rompin, Pahang, late last month.
Soon after the robbery, the man spent half the money settling debts, buying a 4WD and planning a holiday to Pulau Tioman with the woman.
Several days later, he gave his wife RM1,100 before leaving her and their four children in Taman Bukit Subang.
It is learnt that the suspect and his girlfriend had planned to get married next month.
