Personal touch better than academic qualifications, says PAS
KUALA KRAI: The issue over the academic qualifications of candidates vying for the Manek Urai seat has become a topic of debate between Umno and PAS.
PAS elections deputy director Datuk Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Abdullah claimed that its candidate Mohd Fauzi Abdullah had a similar background to that of former Manek Urai assemblyman Ismail Yaacob.
“Ismail has iconic status here as he was a five-term assemblyman. Mohd Fauzi, too, is not academically inclined,” he said at a press conference here.
Wan Abdul Rahim, who is Kota Baru MP, also claimed that Umno had made a mistake in fielding a candidate with high academic qualification, but lacked the personal touch with the voters who were mostly ranchers and plantation settlers.
The voter composition in Manek Urai is 99.2% Malays and Muslims. There are 50 Chinese voters and 40 Indians.
Wan Abdul Rahim also announced that the Kelantan Fishmongers and Wholesalers Association would organise a demonstration at the wet market in Lok Lok to protest remarks made by Umno leaders.
The demonstration on Friday, would be led by association president Ahmad Tammizi Salleh.
Umno leaders had allegedly made remarks about Fauzi’s vocation as a fish wholesaler.
