Activate joint-panel to tackle smog fast, says MB
MUAR: Badly hit by haze, Johor is urging the Federal Government to activate its joint-cooperation committee with Indonesia to resolve the worsening problem – fast.
“It has been bad and it is getting worse,” said Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.
Since there were no hotspots in the peninsula lately, the source of the current haze was from Sumatra, he added
Malaysia and Indonesia used to have a joint-understanding on matters related to forest fires. “We want the two governments to activate the understanding and make efforts to curb the worsening haze fast,” he said after opening the Bakri Umno division meeting yesterday.
Abdul Ghani said the people, especially those suffering from asthma and illnesses related with breathing, faced serious respiration problems.
The matter, he added, was made worse with the outbreak of the influenza A(H1N1). Meanwhile, Muar marine base commanding officer Asst Supt Lajis Tahir said visibility along the Malacca Straits dropped from about two nautical miles on Saturday, to below 500m yesterday - and the haze reached several kilometres upriver.
“We want fishermen to be careful of sandbanks at the estuary here.”
