Miri courts system a hit with Nazri
By STEPHEN THEN
MIRI: Court transcripts and rulings processed and ready for use – all under three minutes.
An impressed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Tun Abdul Aziz saw this happening at the Miri Court Complex and wanted such efficiency implemented nationwide.
“Sarawak and Sabah are way ahead of peninsula Malaysia when it comes to court efficiency because of the electronic court systems implemented three years ago,” he said at a press conference here.
“The video-conferencing facilities enable the court officers here to conduct proceedings with the courts and lawyers elsewhere in Bintulu, Sibu and Kuching.” He added that maximising the use of technology helped save time and travelling costs.
“I am very impressed,” he said. “It is time for the states in peninsula Malaysia to implement these electronic court systems.”
Nazri said he would discuss with the Judiciary and to the Chief Justices in Kuala Lumpur to get the courts in peninsula to do the same. The translators here, who are well-versed in ethnic languages, also got the thumbs-up from Nazri, who noted that their ability helped the courts to dispose off cases faster and efficiently.
The minister later visited the public bus terminals here and promised to seek more fundings to help improve the services connecting Miri to the rural areas.
He will visit Bintulu, Sibu, Sarikei and Kuching next.
