New museum to spur Johor Baru
By GLADYS TAY
JOHOR BARU: The opening of the first Chinese history museum here will help bring the city back to life and spur tourism.
Johor Baru Tiong Hua Association manager Eric Ku said besides conserving the culture of the Chinese in Johor, the museum would add to the variety of cultural attractions in the city that could draw tourists to the area.
Majestic: The first Chinese history museum located along Jalan Ibrahim in Johor Baru. Located at a 60-year-old building along Jalan Ibrahim in the heart of the city, the museum would feature a collection of artefacts related to the Cantonese, Hokkien, Hainanese, Hakka and Teochew clans, he said.
He added that the presence of pre-war shops near the museum would add to the “traditional” atmosphere in the area.
“For example, a famous traditional bread factory and a kueh teow soup outlet which is now operated by the third generation are only a few minutes’ walk from the museum.
“Besides that, the buildings in the area are all above 60 years old and the Chinese Old Temple that has existed since 1870 is also located nearby,” he said.
On the items to be displayed at the museum, Ku said it would mainly comprise of pictures on cultural events celebrated in the olden days and also cultural tools and equipment used in the past that are rarely found now.
“The representatives from the different clans and associations have spent about five years to gather the objects and documents.
“We are now finalising the items to be displayed and all descriptions will be written in Malay, English and Chinese,” he said, adding that the estimated investments on the museum was about RM1.5mil.
He said that Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman is expected to open the museum on Oct 3, which falls on the Mid-Autumn Festival day.
Ku said that among the events to be held in line with the opening was a special exhibition on traditional weddings of all the five clans.
“Subsequently, we will conduct exhibitions related to the traditions and cultures of the clans to attract visitors,” he said.
Those who wish to contribute to the museum can contact the association at 07-2788 999.
