BUKIT MERTAJAM: Despite his serious appearance, Barisan Nasional candidate Rohaizat Othman, says he is a down-to-earth person.
“I apologise to voters in the Permatang Pasir constituency if they have perceived me as being arrogant.
“But I find it difficult to wear a broad smile all the time. I am more comfortable smiling without showing my teeth.
“Whenever I give a broad smile, my eyes tend to close. And, whenever I smile without showing my teeth, people say I look serious,” he said when addressing the Barisan women’s election machinery in Kampung Petani, Permatang Pasir yesterday.
Vote for me: Rohaizat Othman sharing a light moment with resident Sharifah Bibi Mohd Sidek, 53, during his campaign walkabout at Kampung Petani in Permatang Pauh Tuesday. Because of his serious-looking appearance, Rohaizat said he had to pose no less than 500 times to get the right shots to be used in his posters and other election campaign material.
He said his wife Khairul Niza Abd Razak, 38, who some say looked proud and serious, was also a down-to-earth person.
Khairul Niza, a lecturer in Universiti Sains Malaysia remarked that she preferred to be called Niza and not Khairul, to which Rohaizat joked that Niza here was spelt without the letter, R as in Nizar, a reference to the former Perak mentri besar.
On a serious note, Rohaizat said that he would persevere to meet as many voters as he could despite a smear campaign against his credibility as a legal practitioner.
“ I will try to clarify about the allegations, if necessary. So far, the voters have been quite responsive when I approach them,” he said.
Rohaizat told campaigners to ask voters to give him a chance.
“Remind them that the Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has promised to adopt Permatang Pasir as a golden child, if Barisan wins,” said Rohaizat.
The legal adviser is locked in a straight fight against state PAS commissioner Mohd Salleh Man, 52, in the Aug 25 by-election.
The seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Datuk Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman on July 31.
