US and Britain now recognise our engineers

KAJANG: Malaysian engineers will be recognised in more countries including the United States and Britain now that the country has been fully accredited with the Washington Accord.
Malaysia has been trying to secure the recognition for years and only achieved it this year
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said yesterday that with the recognition, the standards of Malaysia’s engineering courses would be recognised internationally, and Malaysian engineers could now work in places such as Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea and Taiwan.
Established in 1989, the Washington Accord is an international accreditation agreement for professional engineering academic degrees.
The accord recognises engineering degree programmes in member countries. It also acknowledges that a member nation has shown long-term commitment to quality assurance in its engineering courses.
Earlier, when opening the Asean Universities Build-and-Break Competition 2009 at Universiti Tenaga Malaysia, Mohamed Khaled said the contest would let students apply what they had learnt to solve challenges.
It follows a series of contests organised by the ministry including the Robocon 2009 and the Imagine Cup 2009 which was co-organised with Microsoft.
On the involvement of university students in yesterday’s ISA-related rallies organised by Gabungan Mansuhkan ISA, Mohamed Khaled said students detained would be subjected to the full force of the law.
