328 disabled traders get help
JOHOR BARU: About 328 disabled businessmen or 74% of the people who applied for the Disabled People’s Business Assistance Scheme (SBGP-OKU) have been given approval for business ventures totalling RM12.5mil.
“Under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, the Government has allocated RM17mil for the scheme,” Labour department deputy director-general Sabri Karmani said.
He was speaking during a press conference after launching the programme to promote the employment of disabled people here in Johor yesterday.
A total of 12 companies took part in the programme offering over 500 jobs.
Sabri explained that the assistance was not given in terms of cash but in the form of tools and equipment.
Sabri also said that out of the 10,802 disabled people registered with the department under the Disabled Placement System (SPOKU), 7,500 had secured jobs.
He explained that among the reasons the rest of them were not able to obtain jobs was because they lived too far from the location of work.
