Brighter future for six kids after getting birth certs
By ALLISON LAI
MALACCA: It was the best Merdeka gift for three families as six of their children finally obtained their birth certificates from the National Registration Department (NRD).
The four boys and two girls, aged between four and 12 years old, received their birth certificates from state MIC secretary R. Perumal in a simple ceremony.
Restaurant helper G. Victor Mary, 39, said her three children, John Paul, four, Salini, six, and Dass, eight, could finally hold their heads high.
“They used to be teased by the other children in our neighbourhood in Chenderah, Jasin.
Happy bunch: Mary, with her children Dass (right), and John Paul (third from left) showing the birth certificates while Perumal (in blue shirt), Md Yusof and Tanesh (left) look on. “Now they can hold their heads up and no longer be ashamed.
“Their father passed away three months ago from a heart attack.
“I am grateful that his dream is fulfilled,” said Mary when met after the ceremony held at the Perpatih Hall in Kompleks Seri Negeri yesterday.
Mary added that her children could now look forward to better and brighter future, including completing their education after becoming eligible for school aid with the recognition of their identities.
It was also a happy occasion for N. Rajesvaran and his wife S. Shanti, both 42, whose two youngest children, Ellayanmaran, eight, and Logavani, nine, were among those who got the birth certificates.
“We had managed to register our first three children on the day they were born, but failed to do so for the other two,” said Shanti.
Shanti is a housewife while Rajesvaran is a cattle trader.
Shanti said that the plight of her children were highlighted to the authorities by teachers of SJK (C) Sin Wah in Durian Tunggal.
General worker V. Kanesh, 35, also from Durian Tunggal, said his 12-year-old son Tanesh could now apply for his MyKad.
“I am so happy that he will be able to apply for his MyKad soon, and live his future as a Malaysian,” he said.
Meanwhile, Perumal noted that this was the first successful batch to receive their identity papers out of the 30 cases handled by his committee.
“I am happy that we were able to help these families, especially with Merdeka just around the corner.
“Now they will be able to experience the celebrations as Malaysians,” he said.
He added that the committee was formed in June to help identify Indian families or children without proper identity papers in Malacca.
Also present at the ceremony was Md. Yusof Hussin, an officer from the state registration department.
