Sarawak state government to meet Penans over blockades
MIRI: Representatives from the Sarawak government will hold a “heart-to-heart” meeting with the Penans in Ulu Baram to discuss their dissatisfaction over logging and land disputes.
State Assemblyman for Telang Usan Lihan Jok said the meeting would be held in Long Bedian village on Aug 28.
“The state government wants to find a solution to the disputes between the Penans and the timber companies and find solutions that are acceptable to all,” he said.
“The Penans have set up three anti-logging blockades in Long Bangan, Simpang Empat and Long Belok.
“It is not a mass blockade throughout Baram as claimed by certain people, but in three separate places that affected four timber companies — Samling, Shin Yang, KTS and Interhill.
“The timber operations have stopped for now due to the blockades.
“The blockades are peaceful in nature. The Penan protestors are calm and they are not aggressive,” he said.
Jok was commenting on reports of timber blockades at his constituency in the interior of the Miri Division.
“I have spoken to the timber companies. Their managements said they have always treated the Penans well,” he said.
Jok said he would attend the meeting in Long Bedian and would bring along the Miri Resident, the District Officers of Miri and Marudi and heads of government departments.
He added that the state authorities wanted to find ways to help the Penans get their own land so they could have a better life and education.
