New rep will focus on infrastructure and welfare needs

By DERRICK VINESH

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Newly elected Permatang Pasir assemblyman Mohd Salleh Man says he will focus on basic infrastructure, welfare and socio-economic development in his constituency.

He said he would raise the need for necessary aid to the state legislative assembly, state Pakatan Rakyat Council and via the state executive councillors.

“During my campaign rounds, I took note of some of the constituents’ woes. I will do my best to attend to them,” he said in an interview Wednesday.

Mohd Salleh, 52, who is state PAS commissioner, beat Barisan Nasional’s Rohaizat Othman, 38, by a 4,551 vote-majority in the Permatang Pasir by-election on Tuesday.

Asked about Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s pledge to recommend him to the state government as the next Penang Islamic Religious Council chairman (MAIPP), Mohd Salleh said it would be an honour to assume the post.

“I will, however, leave it to my party leaders to discuss the proposal before making a decision to accept it,” he said.

It is learnt that the term of the present council chairman Shabudin Yahaya would end on Dec 31.

If he took on the council chairman’s post, Mohd Salleh said he would consider reviewing the rental rates of the council’s wakaf (bequeathed) properties, some of which still followed rates before the repeal of the Rent Control Act in 2000.

“The rental of some shop house units owned by the MAIPP and Tithes Management Centre (PUZ) around the Kapitan Keling Mosque area in George Town are as low as RM20 a month.

“We should offer reasonable yet affordable rates, but according to the present market value to help increase the council’s revenue,” he said.

Mohd Salleh said he would immediately occupy the service centre of former Permatang Pasir assemblyman, the late Datuk Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman, in Jalan Permatang Pasir.

He said he would soon start a mobile service centre to reach out to constituents, especially those living in remote areas.
