Contractor Bala wants to help youth in business
PETALING JAYA: Datuk S. Bala-krishnan, who is bidding for a vice president’s post in the MIC party polls, wants to help Indian youths in business, especially in the construction sector.
Popularly know as “Contractor Bala”, the 55-year-old is also planning to set up a foundation in honour of his parents to provide educational assistance for Indian students to pursue their tertiary education.
In an interview, he said the delegates should not think of whether candidates held government posts but should evaluate whether the person has the capability to work for the betterment of the community.
“I have established a strong grassroots support as I have been working on the ground since I came into national politics in 2000,” he said.
“I consider 2000 as a lucky year as I became the deputy chairman of Johor Baru MIC division and contested as an independent for a seat in the central working committee. I came out 19 out of the 23 elected,” said Balakrishnan who was also appointed state MIC treasurer.
Balakrishnan, who made it into the official line-up in 2003 and 2006, said he decided to contest as he had been receiving encouraging support from the MIC delegates.
A factor in his favour is that Johor has not had a vice-president at the national level since the 1980s.
Balakrishnan is married with five children.
He is considered a dark horse in the vice presidents’ race where seven candidates are fighting for three posts.
The others are: secretary-general Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, treasurer Datuk S. K. Devamany, Information chief Datuk M. Saravanan, Kelana Jaya division vice chairman P. Subra-maniam, former Federal Territory MIC chief Datuk V. K. K. Teagarajan and Jelebu MIC division chief P. Mariayee.
