Chinese opera goes high-tech

By JEREMY TAN

GEORGE TOWN: Times are changing – and the once traditional Chinese opera is now using modern technology for better presentation.

From wireless microphones to fog machines and electronic displays, the gadgetry adds a touch of modernity to the classical art form.

One troupe using such gadgets is the China Zhangzhou Yi Shen Chinese Opera, which has been performing across Malaysia since June.

Touch of modernity: Chinese opera actors performing as a electronic board displays lyrics during a recent performance in Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

During a recent performance at the Hai Choo Soo (Sea Pearl) Tua Pek Kong temple in Tanjung Tokong, which chronicled the story of a deity sent to Earth as punishment for his deeds, the Hokkien-speaking troupe used electronic boards to display lyrics in Chinese characters to aid those not familiar with the dialect.

Fog machines were used to create artificial smoke, adding to the drama in several scenes, while artificial snow was created using a compressor with a chemical solution, albeit briefly, in one scene.

Organiser Gek Seng Jaya Trading’s director cum treasurer Ng Poh Gek said it used technology in its shows to set itself apart from other groups.

“The world is changing, so we need to look for ways to add something special to the performances.”

Besides performing for the Hungry Ghost Festival, the 27-member troupe would be performing at temple celebrations around Malaysia until November. It comprises cast members, backstage crew and musicians whose ages range from the early teens to the late twenties.

The troupe’s next stop is in Bagan Serai this weekend.
