Man weds dying lover

‘‘MY love is only for you. Let’s get married even if you have only one day to live.’’

Sin Chew Daily front-paged a poignant tale of a couple who got married last Sunday although doctors had given the bride only a few months to live.

The couple – Shi Zhen Wei from Yancheng City and Song Xin Ran from Lianyungang City in Jiangsu province – met via the Internet and fell in love with each other.

Two years ago, Song was diagnosed with colon cancer and Shi and his family used up all their savings to pay for her treatment.

In June, doctors told Song that she was dying and that she would only live for probably another two to three months.

That was when Shi decided to marry her.

> Sin Chew reported a call made to Chinese clan associations to promote filial piety in a bid to solve problems of senior citizens being abandoned.

In making the call, Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia president Tan Sri Lim Gait Tong said campaigns to encourage filial piety should start in schools.

“Chinese clan associations can also organise more activities for the senior citizens, such as qigong session, social dancing and singing competition.

“This way they will be able to enjoy their time besides keeping fit,” said Lim during the swearing-in of the Federation of Hainan Associations Malaysia new committee.

Lim said that of the 295 old folks reportedly being abandoned at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, 125 were Chinese.

In Seremban Hospital, 11 of the 24 were Chinese.

Such scenario was something that was hard for him to accept, said Lim.

“The Chinese take pride in being filial to their parents.

“The high number of such cases is a reflection that something is wrong with the education system or we have stressed too much on economic development and neglected our traditions?” Lim asked.
