Yasmin named best director for Talentime


KOTA KINABALU: The late Yasmin Ahmad was chosen the best director for her film Talentime at the 22nd Malaysian Film Festival (MFF) here.

She won a trophy and a cash prize of RM20,000, which were received by her younger sister, Datin Orked Ahmad.

Yasmin also won the best screenplay award for the film, for which she also received a trophy and RM15,000.

Talentime also won the award for the best supporting actor through Mohd Shafie Naswip who walked away with a trophy and RM10,000.

Earlier at the award presentation held for the first time at the Dewan Canselori Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Talentime was among the four films which received the Special Main Jury Award.

The other three films were Kami The Movie, Histeria and Geng: Pengembaraan Bermula.

Yasmin, 51, died on July 25 at about 11.25pm after suffering a stroke and brain haemorrhage.

The 22nd MFF also showed a video clip that lasted about two minutes in her memory.

The brief video clip, with actress and singer Adibah Noor as the narrator, showed excerpts of the films and commercials directed by Yasmin.

Meanwhile, Papadom directed by Afdlin Shauki won the best film award.

He received a trophy and a cash prize of RM50,000.

Afdlin also won the Best Actor award while the Best Actress award went to Liyana Jasmay for the film Papadom.

Both won a trophy and a cash prize of RM15,000 each.

The 22nd MFF also chose Omar Man and Mariani Ismail as the winners for the Best Veteran Actor and Best Veteran Actress awards respectively.

Also present at the ceremony were the Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim. — Bernama
