Manoharan sues IGP, A-G and four others for defamation
KUALA LUMPUR: Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan filed a suit for RM100mil against the government, Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan and three newspaper publishers for allegedly defaming him.
The newspapers involved are The Star, The New Straits Times and Utusan Malaysia.
The writ of summons was filed through Messrs. M. Manoharan at the Civil High Court at the Jalan Duta Court Complex here Friday.
Manoharan, who is the legal adviser to the banned Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), is seeking, among others, exemplary and aggravated damages, and an injunction to prevent Musa and Abdul Gani or their agents from repeating the alleged defamatory words against him.
In the statement of claims, Manoharan stated that Hindraf relied on peaceful means to bring about reforms and that the government had mounted a campaign to put him and Hindraf in a bad light. He claimed that Musa and Abdul Gani had falsely and with malicious intent caused the defamatory words to be published in the three newspapers.
Manoharan also claimed that his detention under the Internal Security Act on Dec 13, 2007, at the Kamunting detention centre in Taiping was unlawful and politically motivated.
He was released on May 9 this year.
He claimed that Musa and the government had used the defamatory words as one of the grounds to detain him under ISA. - Bernama
