Ooi brushes off pressure to quit as chief of staff
GEORGE TOWN: Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi has brushed off attacks from Forum Penyelarasan Umat (Forum) to compell him to resign as Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s chief of staff.
The DAP leader claimed that Forum was not a registered entity and it was backed by Umno which was looking to cause trouble within Pakatan Rakyat.
“Forum is not a registered entity. Thus, I cannot legally sue them for defamation. As such, they don’t deserve any comment from me,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Ooi said Jemaah Islah Malaysia (JIM), of which he purportedly made a statement in August linking the body to religious extremists, had aborted meetings with him twice.Efforts were on-going to arrange another meeting.
“JIM aborted the meeting with me twice – (once) arranged by (Komtar assemblyman and Lim’s political secretary) Ng Wei Aik and (another) by a PAS intermediary,” he said.
It was reported yesterday that Forum had launched a campaign to collect at least 100,000 signatures to pressure Ooi to step down as chief of staff for allegedly labelling JIM an extremist group.
