KUCHING: An assemblyman has pressed for Malaysia Day to be declared a national holiday, saying this will give true meaning to the 1Malaysia concept.

“We were ‘one Malaysia’ on Sept 16, 46 years ago,” said Padungan assemblyman Dominique Ng Kim Ho.

“Malaysia Day is a day we should all be very proud of. It should be given due recognition,” he said after a ceremony to hoist the national and Sarawak state flags at Padang Merdeka here Wednesday.

Sarawak, Sabah and Malaya formed Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963.

Ng urged Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to declare Malaysia Day a national holiday from next year.

The Prime Minister is expected to be here on Thursday where he will join 5,000 people for in breaking their fast at the State Mosque.

Ng also urged the state government to celebrate Malaysia Day from next year. Unlike in Sabah, Sept 16 is not a state holiday in Sarawak.
