DPM: Regain public trust, not point fingers

PUTRAJAYA: Barisan Nasional and its component parties should work towards regaining public confidence and not blame or point fingers for losses in the last general election, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu’s statement that Indians were not angry with the party but with the Barisan for not doing enough for the community was incorrect.
“But he has the right to speak the way he spoke. I think we have to take this in totality as it is hard to separate one from the other, as MIC is very much a component of Barisan and Barisan comprises the component parties,” he said.
Muhyiddin said “irritations” have been expressed by all Malaysians and not just the Indian community.
“I’m not going into detail on this. What’s important is what Datuk Seri Najib said at the (MIC) delegates conference, which is to continue to regain lost ground among its community,” he said.
Muhyiddin was speaking to reporters after holding a meeting at his office here with Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Senator Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom and the Islamic Religious Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) on the future direction of Islamic studies.
Asked on an MIC delegate’s suggestion to garland former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s photograph with slippers, Muhyiddin said he wanted Samy Vellu to take the appropriate action as soon as possible as it was disrespectful.
“We don’t want relations between Barisan component parties to be strained so the party has to take the necessary action,” said Muhyiddin.
