Shahrizat: Be careful when commenting on rape
KUALA LUMPUR: Rape is a serious matter and officials must be careful when making statements, said Women, Family and Community Minister Senator Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
“I will communicate this to the people concerned,” she said after attending the Baraqah Ramadan Programme organised by the ministry at the Social Institute of Malaysia yesterday.
Women’s Development Department director-general Datuk Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur has been directed to oversee programmes for the Penans.
Shahrizat, who was commenting on the peaceful protest of several non-governmental organisations in Putrajaya yesterday, said two of them – Women’s Aid Organisation and Women’s Centre for Change – were also with the committee that surveyed the conditions of the Penan victims and witnesses earlier this year.
Among others, the groups called on the Government to take steps to ensure sexual violence victims among rural indigenous communities, including the Penans received legal redress and provide support for the sexual abuse victims.
