Probe on ‘middlemen who supplied arms to Iran’

KUALA LUMPUR: Relevant authorities will look into reports that “Malaysian middlemen” bypassed trade restrictions to supply arms to Iran.

“We need to determine who made the statement and what is the proof,” Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday after witnessing a joint-venture agreement signing ceremony between BiotechCorp and UEM Land Holdings Bhd.

It had been reported that Iran increasingly obtained United States military equipment and technology through shipments to Malaysian middlemen.

These middlemen had illegally circumvented trade restrictions, according to American officials and analysts.

Since 2008, the US has charged, convicted or sentenced defendants in at least six cases which involve Malaysia and more shipments are under investigation.

On the upcoming Bagan Pinang by-elections on Oct 11, Muhyiddin said Barisan Nasional would only reveal its candidate after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Earlier, Muhyiddin said that Malaysia would have its first biotechnology ecosystem costing RM550mil when it was completed next year to cater for local and international firms.

The dedicated biotechnology park named Bio-XCELL, is a joint venture between BiotechCorp and UEM Land Holdings Bhd. It has custom-built facilities to research and commercially develop biotechnology products on a 72.5-acre site at Iskandar Malaysia’s Southern Industrial and Logistics Cluster.
