Two ATMs targeted on Hari Raya

BY STEVEN DANIEL

PETALING JAYA: Taking advantage of the stretch of Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays, three thieves tried to blow up an automated teller machine (ATM) at a bank in Putra Heights, Puchong in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

However, they escaped empty handed when the alarm went off.

Selangor Deputy CID chief Asst Comm Khaw Kok Chin, said the bank’s CCTV captured images of the suspects entering the premises at around 6.30am before spraying the camera with red paint.

“The suspects then proceeded to place what is believed to be a home made explosive on the ATM before blowing it up.

“However, there was a security guard inside the bank who heard the loud explosion and immediately triggered the alarm,” he said.

He said the suspects, believed to be in their 30s, made a quick get away, upon hearing the alarm.

According to the security guard Asli Ali, 43, he said he was shocked and terrified when he suddenly heard the loud explosion.

“After the initial shock, I realised someone was trying to steal money from the ATM and quickly triggered the alarm and called the cops and my security company on my handphone.

“I could not get a look at the suspects because of all the smoke and dust after the explosion,” he added.

Police are also investigating another attempted ATM theft in S20, Shah Alam, which occurred about an hour earlier.

In that incident, the two suspects also left empty handed after trying to peel open the machine with a metal bar.

Police are not ruling out the possibility that both attempts could have been committed by one gang.
